Julie Peters: E-RYT

I am a Yoga Alliance registered E-RYT 200, and am currently working on my 500 hour from Semperviva Yoga in Vancouver BC. I teach a variety of styles including Yin, Hatha,  Restorative, and especially Vinyasa Flow. I own and manage East Side Yoga studio in Vancouver BC with my mom Jane, but teach in a few other places as well.

I am also a freelance writer (you can read some of my articles here: https://www.jcpeters.ca/writing/ ) and a poet, (see some of the poems I’ve performed here: https://www.jcpeters.ca/poetry/). I have a Master’s degree in contemporary Canadian poetry from McGill University; my thesis focused on the fabulous, lush poet and playwright George Elliott Clarke.

The writer and yogi in me have gotten together and created a workshop called Creative Flow: we move our bodies in a way that stimulates energy centres in the body that help to spark creativity. Then we write. I also teach a 20 hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training called Teaching as Storytelling that explores the various ways a yoga class can parallel the structure of a story, and how to get creative with these elements as a teacher.

See Class Schedule and Events to find out where you can practice with me.

Mission

Yoga is a lot of things to a lot of people, but to me it was the key to unlocking the secrets of my body and my mind. As a skinny, anxious, stressed out kid and teen, yoga taught me that there was strength and grace and beauty and all kinds of amazing things inside my body if I started to look for them. Yoga is a process of learning the language of your own body, and once you do that, you open the door to making your own choices, trusting yourself no matter what anyone says, and knowing the difference between the ‘stuff’ that tries to stick itself onto us from the outside world and what’s actually true. Yoga is revolutionary!

My classes are fun, dynamic, and full of humour and compassion. As a teacher, I want to be your river guide, but it is ultimately your journey.

Teacher Trainings

Teaching as Storytelling: Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training: all at East Side Yoga, March 2013, August 2012, March 2011

Led Workshops

Creative Flow Progressive: East Side Yoga, Vancouver BC  November 2012 and Summer 2013

Creative Flow Workshops: at Maya Whole Health Studios in Seattle, East Side Yoga in Vancouver, Semperviva Yoga and Highgate and South Granville YYOGA in Vancouver, from 2011 to present.

Womanology: 21st Century Feminism: This is a discussion group for women, not related to yoga but hosted at East Side Yoga. I am co-facilitator. March 2013-present

Wordplay: Poetry in Schools: with this organization, I help lead workshops that introduce youth to poetry.

I’ve also taught:

Going Deep: Yin Yoga and the Poetry of the Body. July 2011 and October 2011, Highgate YYOGA. This workshop is a deep, meditative exploration into the physical and energetic body that will unlock emotional and mental scar tissue as well as physical blocks. Pen and paper at the ready, we create space for journaling and see what comes up.

BROGA: Yoga for Bros: April 2010-2011 Charlie Pentland and I taught a workshop exclusively for men and their specific bodies: we focus on gently opening the tight spots–hips, hamstrings, and shoulders, and work on lower back health, as well as celebrating the strength-building, arm-balancing, and inverting postures that men’s bodies seem made for.

Practice

I’ve been doing yoga on and off since I was about 12 in Toronto, when I got a dog eared copy of Richard Hittleman’s 28 days of Yoga from my mom. In Montreal, I began practising with Julien Gagnon, and then in Vancouver found Coco Finaldi, Jodie Neault, Clara Roberts-Oss, and many of the other amazing teachers that live and pass through here. Shiva Rea, Sadie Nardini, Bernie Clark, and Sarah Powers are major influences as well.
