Julie Peters: E-RYT

Julie is an E-RYT 200, fully insured and registered. I teach a dynamic Flow, a deep and meditative Yin, as well as several other styles that often incorporate poetry and stories.

The writer and yogi in me have gotten together and created a workshop called Creative Flow: we move our bodies in a way that stimulates energy centres in the body that help to spark creativity. Then we write.

See Class Schedule and Events to find out where you can practice this with me.

Mission

Yoga is a lot of things to a lot of people, but to me it was the key to unlocking the secrets of my body and my mind. As a skinny, anxious, stressed out kid and teen, yoga taught me that there was strength and grace and beauty and all kinds of amazing things inside my body if I started to look for them. Yoga is a process of learning the language of your own body, and once you do that, you open the door to making your own choices, trusting yourself no matter what anyone says, and knowing the difference between the ‘stuff’ that tries to stick itself onto us from the outside world and what’s actually true. Yoga is revolutionary!

My classes are fun, dynamic, and full of humour and compassion. As a teacher, I want to be your river guide, but it is ultimately your journey. I don’t always know what’s going to happen in my classes (partner work? Poetry? Yoga dance party?) but if you feel better when you leave than when you came in, I’ve done my job!

Led Workshops

Going Deep: Yin Yoga and the Poetry of the Body. July 2011 and October 2011, Highgate YYOGA. This workshop is a deep, meditative exploration into the physical and energetic body that will unlock emotional and mental scar tissue as well as physical blocks. Pen and paper at the ready, we create space for journaling and see what comes up.

Creative Flow: The Poetry of Yoga. August 2011 and December 2011, South Granville YYOGA and Highgate YYOGA. This workshop explores the connection between a yoga practice and a writing practice. We explore different ways of working into the body, and then specific writing exercises to then channel that energy.

BROGA: Yoga for Bros: April 2010-Present Charlie Pentland and I teach a workshop exclusively for men and their specific bodies: we focus on gently opening the tight spots–hips, hamstrings, and shoulders, and work on lower back health, as well as celebrating the strength-building, arm-balancing, and inverting postures that men’s bodies seem made for. This has been a 4 week workshop, a one day workshop, and is starting as a weekly hourlong class as of January 2011.

Yoga for Writers: August 2009. A 5 week workshop designed to focus on the body issues of many creative writers: tight hips, sore shoulders, and a weak core. Each week we focused on a different aspect of yoga for creativity including a Hatha class for breath and inspiration, a power class for courage and focus, a yin class for emotional discovery, a partner yoga class for support and community, and an inversion class for changing your perspective. East Side Yoga Studio.

Partner Yoga Workshop: September 2009. A 2 hour workshop for friends or partners, suitable for all levels. Designed to have fun, play, and see how your practice changes when another person is there with you! East Side Yoga Studio.

The Dragon Dance: January 2010. A Daoist-style flowing movement meditation meant to get a sweat going, clear out negative energy, and be our physical howl to the full moon. East Side Yoga Studio.

Practice

I’ve been doing yoga on and off since I was about 12 in Toronto, when I got a dog eared copy of Richard Hittleman’s 28 days of Yoga from my mom. In Montreal, I began practising with Julien Gagnon, and then in Vancouver found Coco Finaldi, Jodie Neault, Clara Roberts-Oss, and many of the other amazing teachers that live and pass through here. Shiva Rea, Sadie Nardini, Bernie Clark, and Sarah Powers are major influences as well.
